“SO,” MORAN SAID, and clapped his hands together.

Koby and I were sitting at a table in Biscuits with Moran. Mama Zola, over squawks and protest, had gone back to Seattle with my mother. She wanted to stay, clean the kitchen and prep for tomorrow.

Pete came over and helped Georgie in the kitchen after dusting and sweeping on the Books side.

“I talked to your Detective Chow,” he said.

“He’s not our Detective Chow,” Koby said, landing on that distinction first before asking what he wanted to know. “Did he find out anything?”

“Not yet.” Moran drew in a breath. “He’s got a couple of leads. A couple of suspects.”

“Good,” I said, my head nods quick and slight. “That’s really good.”

“Don’t know how good.” He used his nail to scratch something off the tabletop. “Those couple of suspects he’s got his eye on are the two of you.”

“Us?” We said the word at the same time.

“We didn’t do anything.” My face screwed up. “I’m the one who found him.”

“I know,” Moran said.

“He saw us on surveillance, didn’t he?” I said.

“He did,” Moran said, and gave a nod.

“So how . . . How in the heck . . .” I looked at Koby, who was had leaned back in his chair, his arms folded across his chest, not saying a word. “Why would he think we would do something like that?”

Koby might not have been upset, but I definitely was.

“He said he thought it pretty coincidental that you two showed up at the exact time it happened.”

“Reef called us,” I said, getting exasperated. “We met him because he called us.”

“He had a copy of Reef’s phone records, and it doesn’t show any calls to you,” he said to me, then turned to Koby. “Or to you. At least not in the hour or so before he died.”

“He didn’t call us from that phone.”

“What do you mean?” Moran asked.

Koby unfolded his arms and sat forward. “Reef had two phones.” Ahh, my brother talks! “The one he called us from wasn’t the one that was in his property.”

“Didn’t you show him the call?” I asked Koby. I remembered Detective Chow had asked me to see where Reef had called us. I told him then that it was on Koby’s phone.

“That doesn’t matter,” Koby said.

“Did you show him?” I asked again.

“Yes, Keaton. I showed him the call, but as you can see”—he waved a hand Moran’s way—“that doesn’t seem to matter.”

I let my head roll back. “Ugh!” This was craziness. “Now what?” I felt tears coming on. “He’s going to arrest us?”

“I don’t think he has enough evidence to arrest anyone,” Moran said. “I just wanted to give you guys a heads-up. To let you know to watch out for him.”

“Because he’s gunning for us,” Koby said.

“Exactly,” was Moran’s response.
